Smoker’s Companions were the 18th-century smoker’s multitool. They came in many different sizes, but for the most part, they shared the same features.  Some of those features are understood, some are not. Our Companion measures 5-3/4” long, perfect for carrying around in your pocket. The spring-loaded tong, used for lighting smoking pipes, has just enough bite to grip a live ember without crushing it. The opposite end is designed for tamping your tobacco. Constructed and finished right here in our shop.

Great teaching tool
For those fascinated by tools this is great. By asking folks what they think it does you can really get them thinking and understanding older times. I think this was more of a tavern tool. When you went you would by a beer and the Keeper would lend you a mug and if you wished a smoke he or she would lend you a long tavern pipe prepared with your choice of weed. Then you would move to the fireplace and use this tool to have your smoke. The fire place draft removing some of your spent smoke. The tool would be returned to the mantel or the Keeper along with the pipe which would then have the end bit broken off and discarded, preparing the pipe for the next costumer. The notch in the bottom of the tool is a string cutter. Tobacco along with many other items was shipped in paper and in this case waxed paper tied up with string.
