Stoneware Pickling Jar
Similar ovoid storage jars were used throughout the 1700’s. Made of a specially formulated stoneware clay to handle liquids, so they are perfect for pickling as well as for dry storage. These pottery jars were usually covered with a piece of cloth, paper, leather, or bladder. Handthrown by our potter here in Indiana. 6-1/2” tall by 5” in diameter. Holds a little over a quart. Food-safe, lead-free glaze.

Another wonderful purchase fom Townsends. Great quality. I absolutely love supporting Townsends.
This is a beautiful pot. I will probably end up using it as a vase, since I’m not sure how to use it for food storage- at least not yet. It would be great to see some pots like this that are unglazed on the bottom 2/3 or so for burying in wetted sand pits to keep cool. I think those pots might typically have a couple of handles on the top sides to fasten a board over the top to keep pest out of it.

The pickling jar is stunning, even more beautiful in person than in the photos here. I will certainly be ordering more to add to my kitchen.
