A New Way to Pay the National Debt – Gillray 1796

A new way to pay the national debt by Gillray 1786 18th century british political cartoon

James Gillray  1756 – 1815

It’s a left over from wheelbarrow week.  It is caricature, so you have to take that into consideration but still very interesting.   Special note – watch for that sailor hat again.  it is probably a worn out tricorn hat with the brim cut off almost entirely, it shows up frequently and at times looks very much like a bowler hat.

Detail:  sailor, sailor hat,  sailor clothing, military band, wheelbarrow, coins, money, tricorn, hair.

The Encampment on Blackheath MDCCLXXX – Sandby 1783

Paul Sandby  1731 –  1809

Day 5 of wheelbarrow week and this one is a Duesy.  Click on the picture and get the close-up, I promise you will find something interesting.

Detail: wheelbarrow, children, doll, dog,  wagon, horse, soldier, mill, burrow, basket, fire, cook-pot, cooking, tent, vendor,  drum, waggoner, cards, duck, camp follower, military camp

Bonus wheelbarrow from Diderot’s L’Enclyclopedie

Market Scene – Aertsen 1550

Pieter Aertsen  1508 – 1575

Day 4 of wheelbarrow week.   This picture is just fabulous.

Detail:  wheelbarrow, market,  cart, horse, basket, food, pots, chair, produce,  vendors, tent, well, chicken,  barrel

Bonus wheelbarrow engraving from Diderot’s L’Encyclopedie
